Winter Tree Identification Workshop
February 7 @ 8:00 am - February 9 @ 5:00 pm$10
Join Forester Dale Weigel at Spring Mill State Park on Thursday, February 7 and Saturday, February 9 to learn how to identify trees in winter. People are encouraged to attend both sessions of the workshop.
Thursday’s session will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and is at Spring Mill State Park, east of Mitchell, IN, in the basement of the Inn. Saturday’s session will also be held at the Park. Participants will meet in the parking lot of the Grissom Memorial at 9:00 a.m. The Saturday session should last until about noon.
The class is sponsored by the White River RC&D Forestry Committee. Weigel will be joined by Teena Ligman and possibly other Foresters to instruct the class.
Weigel explains that in Thursday’s session he will go over ways to easily tell trees apart without their leaves. As a forester with over 42 years of experience Weigel has many insights in identifying trees. He will bring twig samples and many of the nuts and seeds from the trees he’ll discuss for people to compare.
On Saturday, Weigel and other foresters will take people on a foray through the woods identifying trees and show people the differences in bark, twigs, nuts, and other characteristics. If people are unable to make the Thursday session, they are still welcome to attend on Saturday.
Weigel, Ligman, and Janet Eger, District Forester for Orange and Lawrence County recently presented this workshop to 80 surveyors at a French Lick Conference. This is also the fourth year the tree ID workshop has been taught at Spring Mill. The workshop continues to be enduringly popular and past participants find it useful and fun.
The cost of the workshop is $10 and pre-registration is appreciated so we have enough handouts available. Refreshments will be provided at both sessions. Please call Teena Ligman at 812-278-0139 or email email@example.com for more information or to register for the workshop.
