Hardwood University- Tree and Quality, Scaling, and Measurement

Scale standing trees for diameter, merchantable height, and board footage. Inspect trees for timber quality and discuss impacts on tree/log grades and value. Practice tree grading on selected trees. Fell a tree or two and discuss bucking decisions to maximize the value of each log. Discuss and practice log grading and value impacts. Registration includes a tree measuring stick and a lunch. 9:30 – 10:00  Registration and Hardwood University Program Introduction

10:00 –10:30  Tree measurement – diameter, height, volume

10:30 – 11:00  Overview of hardwood tree grading

11:00 – 12:00  Outdoor practice tree scaling, volume estimation, use of tree stick

12:00 – 12:30  Lunch

12:30 –   1:30  Cut down 1-2 trees, discuss best log bucking practices to maximize value

1:30 –    2:30  Observe, measure, and grade the logs

2:30 –    3:30  Estimate/calculate the value of standing trees and bucked logs

3:30  Conclusion
